The
Human Genome Project was formally launched in October 1990,
where the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institute
of Health collaborated on the ambitious venture to sequence
the human genome as well as other organism to include mice
and bacteria. This included identifying the 30,000 genes in
the human DNA and determining the sequences of 3 billion DNA
base pairs for the advancement in the understanding of human
susceptibility to diseases. On April 14, 2003, the Human Genome
Project was announced complete. Due to the large scale project,
3%-5% of the budget has been allotted to the ethical, legal,
and social issues (ELSI).
